IIPM NEWS :- Fifteen seconds of fame...

IIPM BEST B-SCHOOL

The Yahoo-Reuters tie up gives users a chance to make their own news
If you thought blogging was the best way to express yourself in the Information Age, think again. It’s time to rejuvenate the reporter in you and look out for those ‘Kodak Moments’ that could make you a celebrity overnight. Internet portal Yahoo! has tied up with news agency Reuters on December 4 to launch an online news service – You Witness. People who have captured photos or videos of news events can now post them on the website, after which it will be screened and put up for others to see.

You Witness will run selected images contributed by users as part of contemporary packages in Yahoo! News. As camera-based cell phones are packing in more and more mega pixels and memory space, people could certainly be lured into this opportunity for fame and fortune (there is a chance for a quick buck if the material is used for commercial purposes). Of course, there is an element of good luck too. Someone could just ‘happen’ to be at the right place & time to capture one of those simply sensational ‘Kodak Moments’. For instance, most footage of the tsunami that hit the eastern coast of South India in 2004 was by amateur photographers. Yahoo! plans to expand this to sports, entertainment et al. BBC’s Your News service already invites photo essays from users and holds contests for the best photographs in different categories.

With the launch of the new service, Yahoo! hopes to leverage its resource base to provide quality, relevant news to users, much with the spirit of citizen journalism. However, the main issue is copyrights, which could seriously jeopardize all the potential that this new medium of expression promises. Perhaps that’s why the expertise of Reuters will prove invaluable. On the other hand, all you budding roving paparazzi can now have a field day. But remember people; make sure you do not get others (or yourself) into trouble during your travails. Reporting is risky business at times ;-)

...Or the forsaken gift of Ebola...

IIPM PUBLICATION

The new virus, if left unchecked, would be the next global epidemic
Here is another addition to Africa’s woes. It is now reeling under a virus that is a potential competitor to HIV and the deadliest killer of all – Ebola (from the river Ebola in Democratic Republic of Congo). And for the uninitiated, this disease is so lethal that the incidence of death is nearly 90% and many a time the doctors and the nurses treating the patients become the eventual victims.

It is so contagious that it can spread through not just the body fluids (saliva, stool, blood and sweat), but by mere contact with the infected person (even contact with clothes), because the viral particles remain present on skin in large numbers, so much so that a mere skin biopsy is good enough to detect the presence of the virus. The virus had its first outbreak in 1976 in Democratic republic of Congo, an outbreak which resulted in more than 400 deaths.

Till date there has not been any viable vaccine or medicine to prevent or cure the disease, which more oft en that not, leads to a violent death through bleeding. But the problem with Ebola doesn’t end here. On the contrary, it actually starts here. There is a direct correlation between the rapid spread of Ebola and lack of proper sanitation, which is why it has affected many of the sub Saharan African countries which has some of the worst hygiene conditions. Not just the lack of cure, up till today, researchers have not been able to identify its origin.

The bigger scare is, owing to its fast spreading capability, Ebola can at anytime be a potential weapon for bio-terrorism. So it becomes imperative for the developed world consider it as a global crisis than just any other African crisis and thereby concentrate on efforts to contain its spread before the virus takes any such ugly shape or takes the HIV proportions and spreads outside the geographical boundaries of Africa.

...and with recent profits, the next man in will have an easier job at hand

Founded by Giovani Agnelli in 1899, the Fiat group’s interests have spanned across diverse sectors such as construction, aviation, finance and most critically automotive. The Agnelli family lost prominence after World War II, until the founder’s grandson Gianni Agnelli regained control in 1953. The automotive major felt the heat of competition from Japanese rivals likes Honda and Toyota during the 1990s and in 2000, forged an alliance with General Motors. It soon turned out to be a bad deal as both of them were incurring huge losses. In February 2005, GM ended the partnership by paying $2.55 billion to Fiat. The dawn of the new millennium opened up the Pandora’s box for Fiat – declining market shares and falling profits became a common sight.

Spot the chinks if you can!

IIPM PUBLICATION
The year 1999 marked the entry of Vivek Paul as the chief executive of Wipro. Vivek Paul led the company to an unprecedented path of growth, its sales grew by ten times during his stint from 1999 to 2005. Vivek slowly became the face of Wipro, which, as rumours go, wasn’t to Premji’s liking, as Premji pretty much likes to be ‘in control’. This is cited as the reason for Paul’s exit last year, an event that sparked off a fresh round of debates on the ownership-management equation in corporate India.

One thing’s for sure though – no man is indispensable for a company. Wipro has moved on after Paul and its place ‘up there’ in the ranks of India’s IT greats seems unshakeable for the foreseeable future.

Being the 3rd largest spirits marketer in the world with total sales of 60 million cases, UBHL today offers 140 brands

IIPM BEST B-SCHOOL
Innovation is the backbone of any enterprise, and it seems to be the forte for the United Breweries Holdings Limited (UBHL). “The mantra for success at the UB Group is to follow the Chairman, Dr. Vijay Mallya’s footsteps: always be several steps ahead of the competition, anticipate and provide for consumer needs, and always strive to be the market leader in each of the segment that the group operates in,” says Ram Manesar, Sr. GM – Corporate Communications. The colossal loss in the aviation regulator too could not desist Kingfisher Airlines from moving ahead. Instead, the airlines introduced the concept of roving agents and web check-ins for the first time to attain a bigger market share which is around 8-9% currently.

Standing as the 3rd largest spirits marketer in the world with a total sales of 60 million cases, UBHL today offers 140 brands in that division and has become a bone of contention for other players. Bagpiper Whisky, McDowell’s No.1 Whisky, Director’s Special Whisky, McDowell’s No.1 Brandy et al, the devilish blood-red Kingfisher can, all of them are simply acclaiming the world wide accolade. Sales of the premium segment of beer have shot up by 22% and that of strong by 48% over last year’s figures. The net profit of UBHL for Q3, 2006 is Rs. 24 million. There is little doubt that Mallya will leave a legacy that will be enduring. After all, who had heard of the brand Kingfisher even two decades ago?

Bollywood action in an ad gives it the ‘aha’ feel...

IIPM PUBLICATION
Almost similar was the case with the recently released film ‘Vivah’ from the Barjatya banner. Amrita Rao, who plays the female lead in the film is the brand endorser of the jewellery brand ‘D’damas. And as the film hit theatres, D’damas altered its regular ads to fit in posters and trailers of the candyfloss film. D’damas (just like TAG Hueur) came out with a special Vivah collection. But consider a special case. Despite having no deal inked with Don, L’oreal veiled its global face Aishwarya Rai and instead flashed its another ambassador Kareena Kapoor’s ads with song clippings of ‘Yeh Mera Dil’ from Don fitted in.

Mutually exclusive

IIPM BEST B-SCHOOL
A bird eye view on the buying pattern of MFs vis-à-vis the Sensex reveals the losing characteristic of MFs (see chart). Defying the golden rule of ‘buying low and selling high’, MFs bought heavily in May and September this year (when Sensex was at 12,000 level) and remained net sellers in June and July (when Sensex was down at around 9,000). K. K. Mittal, Vice President and Head, Escorts Assets Management, attributes such buying pattern to, “The cautious approach of the MFs due to the uncertainties prevailing in the market place at that period of time and the changes in various portfolio mixes.”

One may expect the MFs to crawl back to their highest levels. But, with markets tending to be volatile and the MFs reacting very cautiously, MF investors perhaps may not be able to see their NAVs at May heights in the near future.

Definitely, the MF managers have to be proactive in analysing the market trends so that they could act in line with the market swings and deliver what they are supposed to – maximum return on investors’ money. Their addiction to react late that seems to be taking away the cheese from investors needs to be changed.

Scam or no scam, I promise not to resign

IIPM PUBLICATION
He was again appointed the Chief Minister in 1995 and then again in 2001. He resigned as the Chief Minister in 2004 owning moral responsibility of Congress’s poor performance in Kerala. He has served in the Union Cabinet earlier also, as Civil Supplies Minister in P. V. Narasimha Rao’s cabinet. But he again resigned when a cabinet colleague indicated that he might have cleared the sugar import that had turned out to be a scandal due to charges of commission and embezzlement of government moneys.

In the meantime, he was twice elected to Rajya Sabha – from 1985 to 1991 and from 1991 to 1996. But the reality is that Antony had actually stepped into politics during his college days itself, by leading a number of agitations against the then E. M. S. Namboodiripad government in 1957. He anchored the students’ strike demanding lowering of boat charges for students of Kuttanadu; and then another agitation challenging eviction of some farmers by church authorities.

Undone by excesses of leadership!

IIPM BEST B-SCHOOL
The board must deliberate on company direction and monitor it with trips alone – without the CEO – to ensure that what is heard in the boardroom matches what people in the field feel. The board must decide if the CEO is delivering results and in the right way. If so, the board must redouble its support and if not, it must make the tough choice for change.

At HP, it was different; the board operated like a rogue cell, both meddling and forming factions, thus undermining the company that it should’ve been bolstering. If there had been one boss in charge in the person of CEO & chairman, coupled with a good lead director, thins would have been different. And perhaps it is time for companies and the governance police – with their misguided point systems – to confront that reality.

The United Nations sadly has become more of a ‘blametransfer’ machine than a ‘problem-solving’ troupe

IIPM BEST B-SCHOOL
And that is only the military aspect of the peacekeeping effort. Lebanon’s infrastructure, especially in the south, has been decimated. Homes and livelihoods have been destroyed. Who will build or re-build hospitals? How will communications infrastructure be rebuilt? Who will repair Lebanon’s damaged bridges and roads? The mandate gap reflects the way the world has conducted business with the UN for decades – big promises, small pay-outs and scapegoating if the UN fails. Today, the international community has a tremendous opportunity to secure a small but significant peace in the Middle-East along the volatile border of Lebanon and Israel. How member states respond now, especially those who believe in the purpose and value of the UN, may help shape the outcomes of other ongoing regional conflicts, notably with Iran and Syria, both of which support Hezbollah.

Negotiations for peace in the island nation needs to look at them
In the ongoing internecine civil war in Sri Lanka, issues related to repatriation of thousands of displaced Tamilians residing in refugee camps (103 in total) in Tamil Nadu and Orissa are oft en ignored. While India bound under Indo-Sri Lanka agreements of 1964, 1974 and 1986 has accepted repatriation and granted citizenship to about 506,000 persons up to December 2005, the Sri Lankans remain non-committal to millions of their Tamil nationals that have crossed the Palk Straits illegally. Apart from causing severe pressure to local employment and demography, these migrations have been a severe drain to the economy. Officially, the Government of India has spent close to Rs.3.5 billion in providing relief.

It is important that the ongoing negotiations for finding lasting solutions for Sri Lankan crisis do not ignore core fundamentals related to the plight of these stranded nationals. They have been for long considered to be the part of the problem, it’s high time when their plight be considered for the solution.

Salt of the earth... the earth he freed

None, barring perhaps the great man himself, could have predicted the ebullient response to the civil disobedience movement. “From Calcutta to Mumbai and Madras to Peshawar, no one had dreamt of this unprecedented response” was the tidbit thrown my way. Buoyed by a vociferous support, Gandhiji and his entourage made their way to the villages of Aslali and Bareja, all the while never failing to emphasize the ubiquity of salt and in the same breath critiquing governmental policies. It was then that I realised that his objective was two-fold; he was not just freeing a race, but freeing its mind as well.

SECTOR RANK # 1 : RANBAXY

IIPM BEST B-SCHOOL
As Ranbaxy confirmed to B&E, “We have a balanced business model... Ranbaxy’s US product pipeline is valued at over $40 billion (at innovator brand prices).” The company has now even joined hands with a number of international corporations for joint marketing and joint development activities, especially in the light advanced technologies and techniques not accessible solely to a particular company. Not only this, Malvinder M Singh, CEO & MD, Ranbaxy, has already acquired five entities since having taken over the top mantle last year from Brian Tempest. The acquisition drive has been built on strong foundations such as the $324 million acquisition of Terapia, a Romanian company, and the 2006 takeover of Glaxo Smithkline’s generic products businesses in western Europe.

Malvinder aspires to be “amongst the top five (global) generic players... and to attain a turnover of $5 billion by 2012!” With manufacturing bases in eight countries, with more than 10,000 employees worldwide, with many more countries being targeted for growing their businesses, and with increasing orientation towards having a passionate global vision, Ranbaxy qualifies at the numero uno position in the B&E Power 100 healthcare sector rankings... Undoubtedly ‘patiently’!

Satyam gained a remarkable $316 million from its core IT servicing business; but continued to lose money in its BPO business

IIPM PUBLICATION
Most critically, Raju has shied away from moving up the new-age tech value chain, and focused on consolidating gains in the contemporary technology spaces, like enterprise business solutions. Ramalinga Raju proudly admits that Satyam is one of the youngest Systems Integrators in the world, “Our leadership in the Enterprise Business Solutions space is well-known, and continues to anchor our growth.” Raju’s foresight in transforming the fortunes of Satyam back to its core competence – IT services – came to the fore when Satyam decided to get leaner. The exit from Sify last year signaled these very intentions of Satyam. To the horrors of many analysts, Raju has even moved away from the US market. “The performance during the previous year... demonstrates the strength of the company’s de-risked business model with dependency on the US market coming down considerably,” asserts Raju.

IIPM BEST B-SCHOOL
The enfant terrible of Adland (raging bull in a china shop?!) gets spot-on instantly. “There are really only good and bad film-makers, the form and genres be damned!” A warmed up, Prahlad Kakkar, turns on the heat. “Do you know that many of the Bollywood directors – the younger ones – have cut their teeth in ad film territory, either assisting, choreographing, …whatever? Farah Khan, for example, must have choreographed at least fifty of my commercials. She was a fantastic talent whose contribution in terms of look and feel of a commercial was truly great. As a choreographer, she directs an entire song – from visualising it to breaking it down covering all the nitty gritties – which gives her a total knowledge of the medium.” Besides, Kakkar believes, making ad films is not a rocket science and any intelligent director will recognize and understand that it is neither art, nor self-indulgence, but an application- driven, hard-working piece of business communication created and designed to drive the brand towards the purchase-intent zone. Period.

Hero of the day?

With the government providing impetus to the growth of rural and semi rural areas, and as Bajaj still plans rural distribution channels, Hero Honda has gone way up – not only is it designing finance schemes and supply chains to tap the rural market, but the company is also looking ahead to increase its customer touch points to 3,000 (which span both urban and rural space) from a current level of 2,400 by the end of this running financial year. Further, the company is taking concrete steps to resolve recent labour crises (for example, by signing a three year wage agreement with workers at the Dharuhera plant). But with Bajaj selling 162,132 more bikes than last year to Hero Honda’s 80,920 additional, the “Hero” question still remains open!

Yes, women are shown in power settings, where they are dressed as commandos wearing thick protective attire. They land from a plane and search the entire locality, till they reach their destination – a germ infected toilet. Then comes the punch line – “Here comes the expert in cleaning toilets,” (Harpic!). Is this all she is capable of? With an increase in the number of father-headed single parent homes, men too are actively involved in the purchase of home products. However, even today the so called “liberated” women is expected to be the perfect home maker. So Videocon says, “You and Videocon, the perfect homemakers.” It’s time we moved on.

How good is India at doing business?

IIPM BEST B-SCHOOL
Globally, Singapore occupies the top slot for being the easiest place to do business, followed by New Zealand, the US and Hong Kong. But there’s some good news too: as per the report, India is the top reformer in South Asia, while, worldwide, India stands at the 17th position (the top reformers included Georgia, Romania, Mexico, China, Peru and France); the five major reforms that have enabled India to secure the top position in South Asia include: easing access to credit through making collateral simpler, new risk management procedures in customs and reforms in stock exchange rules. Further, the country has sharply reduced “the number of days it takes to start a business” -- from 71 days in 2005 to 35 in 2006.

Trouble To His Own Party

IIPM PUBLICATION
People knowing Arjun Singh closely cite an anecdote to illustrate his political acumen. He was likely to be axed as Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh when the Bhopal gas tragedy took place in 1984. Despite the then Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi’s (and the US government’s) clear opposition, he got the Union Carbide Chief arrested. Though Rajiv ensured the person’s release, this master move from Arjun ensured that the Congress could not sack him right then, or even afterwards, as that would have been seen as sacking a saviour of the Bhopal victims.

And the only effort you need to make is watch a 10 second commercial on your cell phone before accessing the desired service such as a call or SMS. This is the astounding “zero phone bill” concept being tested by Verizon recently. Marketers are confident that once this service is deployed completely, subscribers will lap it up. Definitely a phantasmagorical scenario for the subscribers and a new revenue model for service providers.

Toyota revs up its teaching plans

IIPM PUBLICATION
Recently, Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM) has opened up its National Parts Centre (NPC) in Bangalore at its Bidadi plant. The centre has the capacity to expand to four times more than its present size. The NPC has been set up to meet the future as well as the present needs of service parts of Toyota cars. The company has also initiated a technical education programme, under which it will partner with 20 industrial institutes across India by 2009 to impart training to over 1000 students every year. For the first phase, the company has partnered with four institutes in Delhi, Chennai, Hubli and Mumbai. If these were not enough, Toyota has also disclosed its intentions of entering the small car segment soon. The company plans to manufacture small cars in coming 18 months time.

Ageless antiquity, cultural cornucopia and rustic resplendence weave together a haunting tune of Scottish salvation...

IIPM BEST B-SCHOOL
My aide-de-camp burst forth with a smattering of history to enlighten me, “Yes, the noble Earl called the structure a palace of pleasure and imagination around which the people may place their affections and which may give them a home on which their memory may rest, and declared the building open to the people forever.” The Palace is a mirror of sorts, a manifestation of the lives and times of Glasgow from the year 1750 to date, with its assemblage of displays depicting the evolutionary phases of the city and its denizens in diverse domains of life. And as we wrapped up the evening with a drink down at a café alongside the waterfront, I realised that even in this city – one of Europe’s trendsetters in couture – the profundity of tradition that moulds any society to its contemporary self is a tie that binds, or atleast should bind, till eternity.

With festivities knocking on the door, retail behemoths are all set to beckon the consumer...

IIPM PUBLICATION
This party has been reserved exclusively for India Inc. And they are making the most of it, for sure. After all, retail is universally being touted as the next giant wave in India which is ranked as the 12th wealthiest nation by the World Bank and 4th in terms of purchasing power parity. No wonder, in a country where the ‘festivities never end’, it’s festival time (since the onset of Navratras) when consumers are fanatically busy to bag the smartest deal in the season. With India emerging as the best retail market (ranked number 1 by A. T. Kearney Global Retail Development Index 2005) with definite conviction, retail sector is going to be on the epicentre of this festive season.

The execution of the Toyota Innova campaign was perfect. So was Aamir Khan!

IIPM BEST B-SCHOOL
Take Aamir Khan, add a set of powerful wheels, combine it with a global brand name, and what you get is Toyota Innova’s ace positioning in the Indian market. And Dentsu’s done an awesome job so far as adhering to Toyota’s punch line ‘Everyday, many roles, one car’ is concerned. Injecting life into Toyota’s India story is the versatile Khan, who has managed much more than to just strike a chord with the audience. Giving a larger than life stature to the freshly launched brand in India from the Japanese automobile giant, the first ad positioned Toyota as a spacious and comfortable car with snatches of humour from Aamir’s ‘reel’ life, while the second ad positioned it similarly, with emphasis on the ‘real’ life of a cuttingedge professional with traditional Indian family values.

Son of the late steel tycoon, OP Jindal, and Managing Director of Jindal Steel & Power, Naveen Jindal is an obsessed man... Obsessed with his $4 billion business empire; obsessed with politics (he’s a Member of Parliament since 2004); obsessed with skeet shooting and polo; and even obsessed by the Indian tricolour... Well... he’s the man who made it possible for the average Indian to be able to hoist the national flag not just on special occasions, but every single day. Inspired by his friends in the US who took pride in hoisting their flag even atop their homes, Jindal led the initiative for the same freedom to be given to their Indian counterparts and succeeded in 2002. An MBA from the University of Texas, Naveen’s focus is unwavering towards his many commitments despite the many hats he wears. As a businessman, Naveen is expanding his group’s portfolio of value-added products, bringing the world’s best to India. And as a politician and philanthropist, he is committed to the upliftment of rural society. The government should focus more on expenditure based adjustments

IIPM PUBLICATION
Things have remained more or less the same. In 1991, the government owed to the outsiders and now it owes to the Indian public. On one hand, when India’s international investment position is improving, at the same time the government is heading towards bankruptcy. Revenues are failing to keep pace with unbridled government expenditure, resulting into one of the highest public debt in emerging economies. And to curtail the deficit, the government has been focusing more on revenue-based consolidation strategy, that is, increasing taxes and broadening the tax net. But to what extent has this strategy worked?

SEZs are perhaps the most major breakthrough for India

IIPM BEST B-SCHOOL
The answer lies in the fact that while these blocs hold more than 60% of the total world trade, India’s present contribution to the total trade with these blocs is as meagre as just 3%, while our competitors like China, UK and Singapore hold a share much higher than this figure because of their initial initiatives to trade with major trading blocs. And talking about strategies, SEZs are perhaps the most major breakthrough for India. Centres of higher exports, these areas have shown some good action in the last few months, with companies like Reliance announcing the building of the largest Indian SEZ (with a heart stopping cost of Rs.400 billion). “This project will bring the country to the centre stage of the global economy,” prophesied Mukesh Ambani, promising an initial investment of $5.5 billion into the SEZ. With existing Export Processing Zones also being converted to SEZs, taking care of their structural defects becomes mandatory. “Poor quality of infrastructure, stringent labour laws, and complicated tax procedures are fractures affected SEZ investment,” divulged O.P. Garg, President, Federation of Indian Export Organisations.

The legal potion

IIPM BUSINESS & ECONOMY
So, Kindler is the new guy on the watch… from courtrooms to boardrooms, from analysts & investors to the press, Pfizer has a new face. But is this drive going to be smooth, at a juncture when Pfizer seems all but set to nail its coffin? Currently, Pfizer is going through a stagnated growth period and it has become problematic for the company to improve its financials (see table). And that’s not all, the bleak situation has worsened – its key drugs like Zoloft and Lipitor are facing patent expiry. The company was also asked by the FDA to remove its popular arthritis drug Bextra from the market, which affected Celebrex sales as well.

The legal beagle would surely need all the tricks up his sleeve to protect Pfizer from charged up competitors in the courtrooms. Kindler would also do well to use some of McKinnell’s acquisition skills that helped Pfizer achieve dizzying heights. And above all, Kindler has to accomplish what even McKinnell couldn’t; rescuing an ailing Pfizer from its stupor by bringing in new block buster drugs to the market faster than they move out of the patent protection umbrella. Surely, both McKinnell and Kindler have a lot to brood over in the coming time...

Bush & morality?

IIPM PUBLICATION

George continues to surprise...
Heard George Bush talk ethics lately? How about this: “I will not allow our nation to cross this moral line.” ‘This’ is a Senate-backed bill to increase federal funding for stem-cell research. It allows funded researchers to use days-old human embryos that would otherwise be rejected by fertility clinics. The notion is that these embryos will provide cells that can grow into bones, nerves and tissue. Stem-cellers say they can use this to repair ailing bodies, and also to ward off diseases. Bush used his right to veto and k-o-ed the bill on July 19, 2006, a day after the Senate passed it. He says: Can’t kill life (in the embryos) to save life.

It was the first time Bush used his right to veto though he has threatened to do so 141 times in the past. Stem-cell research is popular in the US where it is seen as possible cure to diseases like Parkinson’s (which killed Ronald Reagan), Alzheimer’s, spinal cord injuries et al. But, conservatives won’t have any of it. Says House Majority leader John Boehner, “The notion that embryonic stem-cell research relies on ‘spare embryos’ that have no value beyond medical research possibilities is tragically & deceptively wrong.”

The bill is largely supported by eminent personalities like Arnold Schwarzenegger, the Republican governor of California, Bill Frist (majority leader in the Senate – seen by some as a candidate in 2008 presidential elections – and coincidentally, also a certified doctor), and Nancy Reagan, Reagan’s widow. But even Republicans, who are largely anti-abortion, are divided on stem-cell research. Britain has a law to encourage embryonic stem-cell research, while countries like Canada and New Zealand have passed a charter to fund it. Clearly, it is disappointing that some conservatives in the US are nixing stemcell research, which can hugely help humans. It’s time that the extreme rightwing in the US learnt where to actually “draw the moral line”. Bush remains a hilarious contradiction, who has rarely displayed concern for life in other areas (like Iraq, for instance). He may be overcorrecting himself. On the other hand, he may be letting people die. Again.

So what’s Mallika got to do with RBI?

IIPM MANAGEMENT INSTITUTE
It’s time RBI resorts to a logical, rational & neutral monetary policy stance
As the top brass of the Indian economic brigade ramble on the rhetoric rhymes of the performance of Indian economy, one must not forget that in the current global scenario, the fundamentals of the Indian economy are as temporary, as Mr. Chidambaram’s and Mr. Reddy’s existence. It is very likely that the same ‘story’ on which the Finance Minister asks us to believe in, might become a ‘fable’ for future policy makers’ references as to how building ‘stories’ in air could be suicidal to an economy.

As evils like spiraling inflation, tumbling rupee, parched stock markets & unfathomable deficits were back in business, B&E had been continuously warning the RBI against its ridiculous moves to hike interest rates across the board; and had alternatively suggested sector specific credit flow controls. As if to vindicate our stand, on July 21, 2006, the Finance Minister finally gave a statement forecasting that interest rates will soft en in the future.

Though Chidambaram claims that this is because inflation has fallen down to 4.68%, what he conveniently forgets to mention is that in April 2006, the comparative inflation figure was just 3.5%; a figure that was thrown away to the wind with the illogical interest rate hikes in the same very months of low inflation. Of late, even the rupee depreciation has made it to headlines, falling to a 3-year low of Rs.46.99/47.00 per dollar. Any further decline will surely discourage invisible capital inflows that were made purely on the basis of forex rate strength.

This clearly signifies that we cannot depend on such kind of invisibles (which restricted current account def cit in FY 2006 to $10 billion, in spite of a monstrous $50 billion trade deficit) to bail out India in the future as well. Clearly, unless RBI follows a neutral monetary policy stance, the way the Indian cookie crumbles would be very similar to Ms. Shehrawat’s clothes! Thankfully, that’s all that Mallika has got to do with RBI.

Imperialism hurts

IIPM Business & Economy

An unbiased chronicle of tragedy in West Asia

In this age of “embedded reporting” and brazen propaganda being dished out in the name of ‘objective’ media, it is difficult to find truly objective accounts of the momentous events that are sweeping across the world. Difficult yes, but certainly not impossible. For, if you really want to know about what exactly is happening in Sudan, Algeria, Iran, Iraq and Afghanistan, simply take a few days off from office, switch off your mobile phone and go through the 1,400 pages of masterful reportage and history written by Robert Fisk, one of the few remaining journalists who cover the crisis and tragedy in the Middle East without ideological blinkers.

The Middle East correspondent for the British daily, The Independent, Fisk has imaginatively titled his tour de force as ‘The Great War for Civilization: The Conquest of Middle East’. The amazing thing about the book is that Robert Fisk has been actually reporting from the frontlines and fault lines of the volatile regions first for BBC and then for The Independent for close to three decades. He was there when the CIA-armed Afghan Mujahideen battled the Soviet army of occupation. He was there when Saddam Hussein (tacitly encouraged by the West) launched a ‘one week’ invasion of the newly formed Islamic Republic of Iran. Fisk witnessed the ‘one week’ war degenerating into an eight-year war of attrition where Saddam used chemical weapons against Iranians. He was there in Beirut when Israelbacked- militias ruthlessly massacred more than 2,000 Palestinian children, women and elderly in refugee camps. Fisk was also around when the first major suicide bombing rattled Uncle Sam – a “terrorist” rammed a truck into a Marine base in Lebanon, killing 268 American soldiers. The brave warriors that the Americans are, they promptly packed their bags and quit Lebanon. Fisk was witness to the frenzy of extra judicial killings after Ayatollah Khomeini took over Iran.

Fisk has also reported on the civil wars in Algeria and Sudan. And of course, he has met and interviewed the elusive Osama Bin Laden in both Sudan and Afghanistan during the 1990s when the brutal Taliban regime was in power. From every battlefront in every country, Fisk has been eyewitness to one simple message that local populations have been trying to convey to the Imperial powers. The message is: “We don’t want your troops. We don’t you to teach us democracy. We are tired of your double standards when it comes to the conflict between the Israeli Army and the Palestinians”.

His coverage of the monumental tragedy in Iraq is educative, and chilling. Way back in the 1920s, the then Imperial power England had tried to impose ‘democracy’ on Iraq through military means. Of course, England eventually failed. But what is chilling is the bizarre similarity between the excuses offered by England for the military conquest of Iraq then and the platitudes offered by the Bush administration now. British troops were then busy massacring and torturing Iraqis who resisted the British version of democracy. American troops are doing quite much the same now.

Don’t for a moment think that Fisk is an apologist for Islamic terrorists who use the American military presence in Middle East (particularly Saudi Arabia) as a valid reason for ‘Holy War’. Fisk oft en laments at the inhuman depths to which the terrorists descend for their political agenda. The book is great because he also laments the inhuman depths to which western democracies have descended in the conquest of Middle East.

Congress of confabulations

IIPM Best B-School

Unless the Congress accepts coalitions, it cannot succeed

The Congress may have saved face in the recent Assembly elections, but its relations with partners are deteriorating fast. Things soured further when its Maharashtra ally, the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), decided to send Bajaj Auto Chairman Rahul Bajaj to the Rajya Sabha, to fill the seat vacated by Pramod Mahajan’s death. Bajaj was primarily backed by the Bharatiya Janata Party and the Shiv Sena, both opposed to the Congress.

Recapitulating, the Congress was hoping to put up a joint candidate despite recent strains with the NCP. But when the NCP backed Bajaj, Congress General Secretary Margaret Alva accused NCP Chief Sharad Pawar of reneging on his words. Pawar’s colleague, Tariq Anwar, claimed the Congress first backtracked by not offering to the NCP even one of the four legislative council seats in Maharashtra.

An embarrassed Congress hastily announced the candidature of Maharashtra General Secretary Avinash Pandey for the Rajya Sabha, but faced certain defeat. Congress Spokesperson Abhishek Singhvi then accused the NCP of working with communal forces. He carefully added that this would have no impact on either the union or the state government. Unfortunately now, the Congress also has strained relations with its Andhra Pradesh ally, the Telangana Rashtra Samiti and Jammu & Kashmir’s PDP.

It’s time for the Congress to learn the dynamics of coalitions to improve relations with allies. The key to power in 2004, after all, was party President Sonia Gandhi’s ability to forge better alliances as compared to the BJP. A repeat victory would surely depend on that again. To an extent, Congress’ problems with allies arise because the party believes it can do better by itself. But the party needs to understand that if it had been that easy to be the lone ranger with monopoly power, the situation in the last elections would have been much different. Clearly, if the Congress continues to toe its aggressive stance, there are only two words that will describe its future: Sure defeat.
